English App Review – ‘Conversation English’

This is an excellent app for English learners with a good variety of exercises and activities.  Good content and relatively easy to use but a bit on the expensive side. Read more…

Product Description:  Practice and improve your English conversation skills with complete professional Conversation English Lessons.  You will learn over 200 common English Idioms and Expressions, improve your Listening Skills, and develop your Speaking Skills.  Each lesson has Tasks in 5 important skills –Conversation Listening, Conversation Reading, Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Sentence Completion. An Idiom Dictionary with Audio Pronunciation is also included.  Conversation English follows the ongoing story of a group of friends and their relationships.  You’ll learn new English idioms, expressions and vocabulary by following the continuing conversations of the four main characters.

The application contains 20 conversation lesson plans which contain useful everyday language and common idioms.  However, the lessons / conversations focus mainly on relationships and so there isn’t a big coverage of topics.  Maybe the developers plan to bring out more apps covering a greater range of topics, but it would be useful to have an all-in-one app that covers common and useful topics such as asking for directions, purchasing things in a shop, discussion about the weather etc.

Each lesson has 6 parts – warm up, dialogue (listen, reading or both together), comprehension, dialogue building, matching and fill in the blanks.  There is also an idiom dictionary and quiz.

Generally, it is easy to use, but I sometimes found the navigation a little bit awkward. For example, in some of the exercises, there isn’t a button to return to the main menu so unless you complete the whole exercise, you have to exit the application completely and then open it again.

Overall, I would highly recommend this app. It is a high quality learning tool for ESL and English students, though I think the price has been set too high.
